Yes, thats doesn’t seem like a lot but considering that my other two betas didn’t make it past that point its a big deal to me. My fishy has been quite happy even with some of the hot days we have had. As far as the suggestions for his water habitat I’ve been trying to find the best balance. Some have suggested tap water, however I’ve found that my tap water allows things to get cloudier more often. With the purified water it stays quite clear. I also have a additive that decreases nitrous and brings up the good levels of bacteria. With my newest fish things have stayed very clean and I found if I clean it too often it affects him. So I’ve been going a bit longer and he’s quite happy. So I just thought I’d update ya. Hopefully more stories to come.

Betta Fish are what I blog about.

Hey Guys, I just found you on google and I need help! Please! I have my betta, Fat Chance, he is beautiful. I have had him at least a year and a half! He is amazing and has so much personality. But lately he has started laying on the bottom and being lifeless. I have noticed that under his chin he’s gray, but thats probably old age. He is in a bubble filtered tank, the water is clean. Is there any treatments I can do?

I got it from a store called Pet Supermarket. They seem to get fresh fish in pretty often and the fish always seem well taken care of.

@Leah - I actually don’t like Pet Supermarket at all Leah, They seem to have some pretty sickly fish when I go their. But that may just be the one by me.
@betta addict - PetCo is actually my preferred store for purchasing betta fish. They seem to have pretty healthy fish compared to other pet store such as wal-mart, petsmart, petsupermarket, and petland - all of which i do not like. And mine also have a section for deltas, halfmoons, and crowntails. They are a pretty cheap alternative compared to buying online. But again, maybe it is just my store.

@Angel - Probably too cold for him, try a heater. I sent you an email.

Well the only other stores in my area, Petsmart, and Petco, both have Betta’s that don’t look good. I don’t know if its because they have so many or what, but I never felt comfortable purchasing from them. Also after the one suggested plant killed my fish Petco is on my naughty list for having workers who don’t know enough. So my local Pet Supermarket was the best choice for me. So far my fish have been ok from there.

Yeah, timophpy, wal mart stinks! the only reason i dont like petco is cause they keep bettas in cups! 1 gallon per betta! they say 10 oz!
August 18th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
also, i have to agree with tim, they do have a good selection! its just, they’re cramped in tiny cups!
August 19th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
My opionion is the petco is the best corporate/chain pet store for betta fish selection and quality… yeah, the space is cramped… but what can you do..
Also guys (and gals) you may want to take a look at your local FISH store… the kind that only specialize in fish. Not any kind of chain. That is where you can find the truly spectacular betta fish you see posted here from time to time.
I live in Florida and there are a TON of fish stores around me that have an amazing betta fish selection. I know a couple owners of these shops personally that give me a call when they have something they know I’m loooking for.
Please consider searching for a fish hobbiest store in your area before going to the chain pet store for betta fish.

Oh yeah, the people in a store dedicated to only fish are also a LOT more knowledgable about all kinds of fish that a random high school student they hired off the streets at those pet stores (petsmart, petco, petland).
August 20th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
Yeah, the people in Petco could use some education! they told me i could put two bettas together. NOPE! the immidietly started fighting.
the other day i went to get some blood worms for my betta at petco, and i saw a BEAUTIFUL betta, it was a crowntail, it waz sooo pretty! it was black!!! it would flare its tail, (which was fully intact) and its eyes were so vivid and attentive, i wanted to get it so bad!

ok tomorrow I’m going to get two bettas, 1 female and 1 male. I have two separate 1.75 gal. tanks w/ two plastic plants and a cave. They will each have a filter and I put the chemical in that you need one drop of for tap water. I have the right food, too. I keep reading that you need a lot of space for bettas, but a couple of years ago we had bettas in the same conditions, but they didn’t last long, I’m not sure if it’s because the store I got them from just had them in l a cup of water in plastic bags…. or am I doing something wrong please help!
Also, I was wondering if there’s enough room for a different fish or something to put into the females tank help!
August 20th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
O also I know what you mean about the people and what they tell you!
1.They told us that guppies were very hardy and did not need the special chemical for tap water or could be put in the tank right away!
2. They told us to wash the tanks with soap, but luckily we knew better.
3. They told us you could a male betta in with different fish….We got him out in time.
That has been a few years ago and I want my bettas to be happy and healthy
Also do I really need a heater?
August 20th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
I also read that you should not put rocks in for bettas, because a tank like mine should be cleaned often and the rocks make the tank dirty or something!!! Maybe I’m just thinking to hard idk!
August 20th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
o i read that i need to clean the tank 2-3 times a week, is that true….ok I’ll shut up know!
August 20th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
sorry, i know i won’t shut up, but i NEVER get fish from wal mart, cuz the one near me has some dead fish in their tanks every time i go there and i’m afraid that if i get one from there it will have a disease or something.
August 20th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
last (i think) thing (this is the best website I’ve found so far and want to make sure I’m doing everything right!) I read somewhere, it might have been wikipedia that said black bettas don’t live nearly as long as the others is that true?
August 20th, 2008 at 5:38 pm
@Soon-to-be-betta-owner - You had way too many questions for me to simply answer here in the comments so I wrote a post answering them here - http://ebetta.com/2008/08/20/betta-fish-questions-answered/
August 20th, 2008 at 5:40 pm
@betta addict - I probably would have gotten that black ct betta
But I keep a lot of bettas. Also the people in the store should not be advising people of keeping bettas together… that is common sense for these fish.
August 20th, 2008 at 6:50 pm
Also do u think its ok to put the cave and plants in when i get the betta instead of b-4? HELP!!! i am getting them tomorrow!
August 20th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
@Soon-to-be-betta-owner - don’t freak out, it’s going to be okay, and easy. Betta Fish are extremely easy to take care of. I am confident you want have any problems. You can put your cave and plants in either before or after you get him / her. People are always changing there fish tank’s scenery, just make sure you hands aren’t dirty (or soapy) before putting them into your tank.
Also you other questions are answered here - http://ebetta.com/2008/08/20/betta-fish-questions-answered/

thanks i feel better now
August 20th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
Thank you so much for being so patient with me. I haven’t handled bettas in a while and they used to be the family pet and now they’re all my responsibility and I want my parents to think i’m responsible and want them to live a long time.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:42 pm
I agree about Petco, the associates are not the most intelligent. I think you have to search around your area and find the best shop. The areas all vary so much thats its hard to set a precedent and say everyone on of a specific store is good. Fish are a fun species to have around, but do your research first! I’ve definitely learned that.

i totally want another betta! i want a HM where can i find those? petcos out.

Instead of getting my Betta from a store I got mine direct from a breeder. When I got him I was told he was about 3 1/2 months old but when you get one from a store who knows how old the fish are. Go online and do a search - believe it or not I found mine on eBay!
